Owner/Operator · Civil & Environmental Engineering

HydroMap LLC is owned and operated by Daniel P. Ames, who holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering and has spent more than two decades building water-data software — hydrologic information systems, open-source GIS, and operational data services used by federal agencies, utilities, and research groups on four continents.

He writes the code as well as the proposals. Every Data Watch in the HydroMap Network — the live dashboards for the Great Salt Lake, Lake Powell, Lake Mead, the Dead Sea, and the rest — is his own work, built directly on public agency data feeds and published with the sources visible on the page.

Dr. Ames is also a professor of Civil and Construction Engineering at Brigham Young University, where he leads research in hydroinformatics and open-source water modeling. HydroMap LLC is an independent private practice: it is not affiliated with, funded by, or endorsed by Brigham Young University.

Our Story

Expanded into operational water data services, National Water Model integration, and international water resources work including UN-FAO groundwater programs.

2024

Software expert witness practice

Formalized an expert witness practice in software patent and GIS/hydrology technology litigation.

2026

We take on a limited number of projects each year so that every engagement gets the depth of attention it deserves.

Research-grade rigor

Our work is grounded in the open literature and in decades of applied experience delivering tools that agencies use in production.

Open by default

Wherever possible we deliver open-source software and open data products so the broader water community benefits from the work.
